Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) is the largest and most famous spa town in the Czech Republic, known for its therapeutic hot springs, stunning Art Nouveau architecture, colonnades, and the International Film Festival (KVIFF). Founded by Charles IV in the 14th century, it's famous for healing mineral waters, Becherovka liqueur, Moser glass, and Carlsbad wafers, attracting royalty and celebrities for centuries. The city is part of the "Great Spa Towns of Europe" UNESCO World Heritage site.
History:
began with its 14th-century founding by Emperor Charles IV (legend says he discovered its thermal springs while hunting) and grew into a famous European spa by the 18th-19th centuries, attracting royalty, artists (Beethoven, Mozart, Kafka), and the wealthy for its healing mineral waters, developing grand Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture, though its population was predominantly German-speaking until the 20th century. The town faced setbacks from fires, floods, wars (becoming part of Nazi Germany under the Munich Agreement), and nationalization but saw reconstruction and renewed fame after the Velvet Revolution, solidifying its status with events like its International Film Festival.
Middle Ages:
The Early Middle Ages period began in Bohemia, as well as in the Český Krumlov region, sometime in the first half of the 6th century AD. We can assume that the almost depopulated borderline region of the new colonising territory was settled by the Slavs a little later. The settlement density and character of the Český Krumlov region in the Middle Ages period was very similar to the settlement density and character of the previous period - the Primeval Times (The Primeval Times settlement in the Český Krumlov region). The archaeological objects - movable and immovable assets were not different from the primeval ones. We have discovered a site of a fortified settlement, some grave- mounds and rare country settlement remains so far. Two significant changes are worth mentioning. There is the first written evidence of the Český Krumlov region and its history. Roman churches built from stones and mortar dating from the end of the 12th century were preserved in the most southern part of Bohemia.
